“Wynn, get over here,” Ethan demands.

“In a minute,” I say irritably. Jeeves might have been able to pull Anne’s data from her lab computer, but she’d tried entering her own readings in my spreadsheet and it’s a fucking mess.

Ethan sighs noisily. “Whatever you’re doing with that spreadsheet, Jeeves can do it faster if you give him the parameters.”

I don’t budge. “No offense, Jeeves, but literally every time I’ve let somebody else mess with this, it’s gotten fucked to hell and back.”

“I completely understand,” Jeeves replies. “However, if I may, I think I have grasped the essential logic?”

Against my better judgment, I pull my hands off the keyboard and mouse. “Okay, I guess. Give it your best shot.”

For a second nothing happens, then the cursor moves, data sorting itself neatly before my eyes. “Damn, Jeeves,” I say, watching as the last of the errors are smoothed out. “Don’t tell Anne, or I’ll be out of a job.”

“According to Sir Donal, I lack the physical form to convince Dr. Wheeler to eat and sleep at regular intervals,” Jeeves answers.

“Great,” I say, only half joking. “So glad I took out all those student loans.”

Anne chooses that moment to pop up at my elbow, scaring me half out of my mind. “Don’t be silly,” she says, pulling me out of the chair by main force. “Do you have any idea how much we can broaden the scope of my experiments with your power?”

“Oh good.” I let myself be pulled along despite the sinking feeling in my stomach. “So now I’m a battery. Perfect.”

It’s actually kind of nice that Anne doesn’t bother to reassure me. Really. Or that’s what I tell myself, as she ropes me into a conversation with Ethan, Lucas, and Livvy. At least with Susan standing there, I’m not the only one without much to contribute. Aside from the occasional Anne-translating, of course. If nothing else, that’s one thing I’ll always be good for.

But it’s becoming harder and harder to ignore the little voice in the back of my head. The one that asks what happens when this new power leaves as suddenly as it appeared. When they figure out how to fix me.
